Our own master shoe resoler is also a master runner: James competed in the NYC marathon on November 7th and came in the 106th male out of a field of 45,000 competitors, and was the 36th US finisher. His time of 2:39 was not a PR, but pretty impressive after taking a red eye, then sleeping on the couch the night before, getting up at 4 east coast time, taking a 5:30 ferry to Staten Island and waiting for the 9:40 start. Huge crowds turned out to watch and cheer- certainly a life highlight and an inspiring race for James.

Dear Cascade Cobbler,

I have a pair of Madrock climbing shoes. They are 1 year and a half old,
not heavily used, but a hole opened on the side of the leather, and is
getting bigger and bigger. I am not sure how it happened.
Is it something that can be repaired? I am attaching a picture of the
shoe. How much would you charge for that?

Dear Climber,

Thanks for the question. Your problem is rare but not unique. There are
typically two reasons this type of hole forms. First you can climb a
particular way or in a particular area that prematurely wears holes due to
excessive rubbing; cracks, granite, etc. Second and more likely in your case
is a defect in the suede, leather, or whatever material manufacturers use. These are hard to detect unless you really look hard when purchasing your shoes for inconsistent feel or look of a section of shoe. For fun you should look at your other shoe on the exact same spot and see what that looks like. If it is fine you more than likely got a
defect. Most companies are not good about replacing since they have a hard
time telling the climber wear from defect after a shoe has been out there
for a while.

What to do about it: We can repair in by putting a rubber patch over the
hole. This would look like an extension of your existing rand and would be
blended into your original rand. We would charge $9.00 for this patch and
would recommend you send it in when your shoes are ready for a resole and
then we can do both at once.

After working on thousands of shoes you start to wonder about how many different people have touched them and what their stories are. Last night I was peeling a pair of shoes and this idea kept me thinking for a few hours about not only who touched them but how far they have traveled. Even before all of you take your shoes around the world on climbing adventures they have already traveled across the Pacific, since just about all shoes are manufactured somewhere in Asia. While many climbing shoes are made by "USA" companies they are typically manufactured in Asia. This point is highlighted brilliantly in the photo above; American on the outside, but Chinese on the inside. So when you get your shoes back from our shop ponder not only where you will take them next but where they have been and who they have met in their relatively short but exciting lives.

Summer in the Methow

It's summer in the Methow (officially and the sun is out to prove it.) It seems like it may last a whole day or so... so, take the day off and get out there.
We went on a hike to Cuththroat Lake this weekend: At the beginning of the hike we were fretting about our lack of sun hats for the boys and debated about the need for jackets; when we were post holing in the snow being pelted by rain we were greatful for the warm layers and wished we had hats. Back at the car, the sun came out and we were in t-shirts again. Confusing weather!

Day on the rock

Our oldest son, Malloch (3.5yrs) had his first day of climbing at Fun Rock. It was a brief outing, but a successful introduction to the sport. For James it was a dream come true: teaching his son to climb! There are a few kinks to work out when climbing with a new climber, belaying with an infant (in the back pack,) and taking photos, but I think we'll master it soon!

Why resole?
It may seem obvious, but we like remind ourselves of the many reasons resoling rocks. Here's a short list :

Performance: Breaking in a pair of rock shoes takes time. Resoling your used shoes allows you to keep climbing in comfortable and predictable shoes, while increasing their performance with the highest quality rubber available.
Quality: When your shoes are resoled with us, they are resoled by a single qualified climber and craftsman from start to finish. Original factory imperfections are fixed and the overall quality of your shoe is enhanced.
Cost: Resoling is a cheaper option than buying new shoes, even with a “pro deal” purchase.
Environment: Resoling your shoes keeps them out of the landfill and rejects the concept of planned obsolescence. We strive to make our prices low enough to keep your shoes climbing and out of the garbage.

Olympic Fever

The Methow Olympic festival is underway- giving everyone a taste of the real deal without the trek to Vancouver. Even our 3 month old got a taste of winning gold on the podium last week. Although the beloved rink was melted out, the location was a great place to launch the festivities.
40 degree temps in the forecast tell us that spring is on its way (in February!) Even though our skating days are behind us, the good news is that outdoor climbing will be happening much sooner than usual.

Skate Sharpening in Full Swing!

The Winthrop Ice Rink is open and the skating is great. We've been getting lots of skate for sharpening already! If your skating will be enhanced by sharp blades, you can drop them off in the drop box at the rink. We pick up skates Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and return them the next pick up day (or you can give them to James or Tory if you see them around!). We've been working on getting our return system for shoes dialed in. The resole part of the business is a well oiled machine that James has fined tuned from years of practice. On the other end are the ins and outs of shipping the shoes. We have become increasingly amazed by how helpful and friendly the USPS folks are and how supportive and curious they are about Cascade Cobbler. We now much prefer returning rock shoe resoles by USPS because of their easy online label printing options, the fact that they pick up from your mail box, and the quick service. To boot, if you are mailing shoes to us and can't find the right sized box, you can ask them for a free priority mail shoe box! At least here in the Valley, they seem to be doing things right.

Rain, Rain, go away!

Have you ever seen so much rain! It's pouring here in the Methow and we just want snow! The good news is that it's keeping us inside- resoling shoes, upgrading the shop and experimenting with new glues, rubbers and soles.

When to Resole?

Sooner than you think is the easy answer. By resoling your shoes a few climbs before you actually have holes in your rubber will prevent extra and costly rand work. One trick to knowing when is feel. Feel the sole and rand rubber with your fingers by pressing the rubber inch by inch. If you feel and excessively thin area next to a solid sole chances are you need a resole. Friction Tips

Ever notice how on days that are not too hot and not too cold your climbing shoes perform better. Thats because most climbing rubbers tend to have an optimum temperature range in order for there rubber to have highest coefficient of friction with the surfaces they are in contact with. We have found that most freshly resoled shoes perform best in temperatures ranging from 50 degrees F to 75 degrees. A few tricks for keeping them at this range.

If its too cold

Rub the soles of your shoes with your hands creating friction and heat just prior to putting them on
Keep them in you pack on the hike up next to your body and surrounded by clothes and maybe even a warm water bottle.
Put them in under your shirt while belaying until its your turn to climb.

If its too hot

Again insulate them in your pack with clothes and maybe a cold water bottle
Cool dry storage in your vehicle (try a cooler)
If you are climbing next to a water source dip them soles in the water for a minute and them dry.

Stinky shoes climbing shoes?

If you have had issues with stinky climbing shoes we have some tips coming from someone who has handled thousands of them.

Moisture is the key culprit because it creates a perfect environment for foot bacteria to grow. The easiest solution to avoiding moisture is to air them out by hanging them off of your pack or storing them in a cool dry place.
Clean your feet. Clean feet = clean shoes. We know it is hard when you are on the road but if you could clean your feet more or equal to your hands your shoes won't stink.
Climbing with socks. While some may say this is drastic, drastic smells deserve drastic measures.
Rotate shoes. Have a few pairs of shoes so if you climb a lot you can alternate a day and give a chance for shoes to air out.
Foot powders and charcoal. Charcoal is a natural odor eater so you can put a few pieces of charcoal in a sock with some baking powder and stick those in your shoes during storage periods.

Good luck reducing smells and thanks for your efforts before you send on your climbing shoes for resoles.

The bevel angle on your climbing shoes is the angle of the edge on your climbing sole. Regular shoes have a positive angle for increased stability but climbing shoes have a negative or incut angle for increased precision. Too negative and your will pop off those fine edges and prematurely wear your rands, too positive an angle and your shoes climb more like running shoes and the sole will wear out prematurely. Climbing rubber: 4 mil vs 5 mil

Trying to decide what to resole those shoes with? The answer as in many cases is that it depends. Here is a quick guide to help you make the decision that is best for you.

If you don't care about sensitivity then you can put 5.0 mil rubber on any shoe and your resole will last longer.
Usually it is best if you match what came on your shoes. 70% of climbing shoes come with 4 mil so if you are not sure that is what you can go with.
If your shoe has a firm midsole then you can go with a thicker rubber and not lose sensitivity in your climbing. A good test for this is try to fold your shoes forefoot in half width wise. If you can't do this due to the firmness than you could go with a thicker rubber.
Bottom line is that we are talking about a millimeter difference in rubber so the decision isn't too critical to your pocket book or climbing performance.

Dog Days of Summer!
With warm weather persisting here in the NW be sure to keep those shoes out of the car on hot sunny days. Once shoes reach about 130 degrees the adhesive that holds them together starts to deteriorate. If they have to be in your car on a road trip try under the seat or even in the cooler.

Cobbler tips for sticky soles

A few tips here for keeping those soles sticky:
1) Keep your soles clean. Any dirt that collects on your soles fills the space in the rubber that normally grip the rock. A light soap and warm water solution is the best if your soles do get dirty.
2) Keep your soles rough. A little sand paper or steel wool to your bases will make the rubber feel closer to new.
3) Before each climb rubber the bottom of your soles with the palm of your hand. This cleans the soles bottoms but also slightly warms the soles which make the stick a bit better. If you have ever watched drag car racing spinning their wheels before the race...same concept.
4) Resole often. The only way to feel the stickiness of new rubber is to have new rubber.

Tips to keep shoes lasting longer from 5.10

Here are some tips to keep your climbing shoes in better shape. If you have other questions or need them resoled, contact us!
· One key point to making your shoes last longer is getting them resoled before they have holes through the soles or the rand. It is recommended that shoes should be resoled when 80% of the rubber is worn through. This will allow for a cheaper repair and keep the integrity of the shoe complete if the mid sole is not rubbed or damaged.

· Keep your shoes away from heat sources, especially leaving them in the car. This can cause the sole and/or rand to delaminate.

· Keep your shoes out of unnecessary sunlight. This will keep UV degradation to a minimum and therefore help with longevity.

· With Lace Up shoes, loosen off the laces properly before taking them off or putting them on. This will prevent over stretching and over stressing the materials in your shoes.

· Don’t walk far in them. Take them off between routes and boulder problems. Wear some approach shoes like 5.10 Mountain Masters to and from the crag.

· After every day climbing, at the gym or bouldering allow your shoes to dry and store them in a well ventilated place. This will reduce bacteria and grit build up inside the shoe and in turn help prevent the degradation of the midsole and upper due to rotting.
